Daeron was the minstrel and loremaster for Thingol in Doriath. He was in love with the King's daughter, Lúthien, and was her best friend and confidant. When Lúthien fell for the mortal, Beren, Daeron sort of perfected his "betraying her confidence to tattle to Thingol" skills. Later, he regretted that. The music that came out of that period makes up what is still the best selling album of all time.
Back in the days of Doriath there were always whispers that Daeron might be more to the king than just a servant. Daeron's mother even suggested so on more than one occasion. Daeron chooses to ignore that because then his feelings for Lúthien would border on creepy. Besides, if Thingol never confirms it, there's no reason to believe it's true.
((Based on the History of Middle Earth version of the Lúthien story, where Daeron is listed as her brother.))
